Monsoon Treks in India are a way to explore the beauty of eternally charming Himalayas. A new face of the Himalayas welcomes the adventurers during the monsoon season. There are many top trekking places in India that are open during the monsoon season and there are some monsoon treks in India that are made for monsoon trekking and monsoon camping. Here we will explore the many options that are available and other aspects of monsoon trekking in India.

Is It Safe To Trek In The Himalayas During Monsoon ?

Monsoon Trekking is on the checklist of any serious mountain trekker. The mountains are covered during this time in a lush green foliage and rolling mist, and this time also sees a lot less crowd compared to the summer and winter season. While there are many charms of trekking in the monsoon it isn’t without its risk.

  • One of the major concerns during the monsoon season, that goes on from the months of June To September, is the landslides. Heavy rainfall often loosens soil and rocks leading to road blockage and trail damage. This often delays travel plans and many times even traps trekkers in remote areas.

  • Along with the landslides there is also the risk of the trail getting too slippery this makes it difficult to walk on and can cause injury.

  • The rain also brings with itself leeches which, though not harmful, can be a lot of nuisance as you might find them creeping inside your shoes and clothes.

  • Heavy rain in the upper altitude of the Himalayas can lead to sudden flooding of river streams, making it dangerous to cross river crossings.

Once you know the risks involved and thoroughly prepare for them in advance, you are sure to be rewarded with adventure and stunning landscapes. The lush valleys, snow-fed rivers and misty landscapes that the monsoon provides are something that only the ones who have a hunger for adventure are able to experience.

How to Choose the Right Monsoon Trek

Choosing the right monsoon trek requires careful planning and preparation, The Himalayan region sees a lot of rainfall during the monsoon season that can make the trek extra challenging. Here is what you should know before going on a Monsoon Trek In India.

  • Avoid dense forest trails or regions like lower Himachal and Uttarakhand during peak monsoon. The soil here is soft and prone to landslides. Stick to well-known, guided treks where weather and trail conditions can be monitored.

  • You can opt for rain-shadow regions like Spiti, Ladakh and parts of Kashmir, many of the regions in these locations are safe from the monsoon clouds and hence receive very less rain. Treks like Hampta Pass, Tarsar Marsar and Buran Ghati are some of the treks that offer the beauty of monsoon without all the risks.

  • Pack the right gear before going on any of the treks. Waterproof gear, quick-drying clothes and high-grip shoes make a lot of difference to your trekking experience.

  • Choose the right trek based on your experience. There are Moderate Treks like Hampta Pass and Valley of Flowers and also Challenging Treks like Buran Ghati and Tarsar Marsar.

Monsoon is the time when the Himalayan scenery is transformed into a magical wonderland, to experience this without any unwanted problems you must be prepared in advance.
