Overview

Offering the widest expanse of snowscape in Uttarakhand, Dayara Bugyal is a perfect picture of the Himalayan winters. This short trek spanning over four days remains true to its name- a Bugyal, i.e. ‘meadows’. This alpine field, that remains carpeted with wildflowers in the summer, turns into the most expansive field of snow in the winters, spread as far as your eyes can see. The reason Dayara Bugyal is so breathtakingly beautiful is because of its location. The meadow is at an elevation of over 10,000 feet. From Dayara, you can see the Greater Himalayan range in all its beauty. The majestic summits of the Gangotri range, including Bandarpunch, Kala Nag, Srikanth, Jaonli, and Draupadi Ka Danda, are so close that you can almost touch them. Trekkers spend hours just watching the sunset over these mountains.

The meadow is famous for its alpine flowers, which bloom in a riot of colours during the summer. The most common flowers include Himalayan blue poppies, daisies, and primroses.

The oak and rhododendron forests that surround the meadow are a beautiful contrast to the snow-covered mountains. The trek is home to several species of birds, including the Himalayan monal, the state bird of Uttarakhand.

The Dayara Bugyal trek is a favourite among our beginner and seasoned trekkers alike at Himalayan Daredevils. “This trek is superbly rewarding at any time of the year"

Itinerary

The trekkers will be picked up from Dehradun Railway Station at 7.00 a.m. from where the journey will begin. Dehradun is well connected with Delhi through railway and road route. Overnight Buses and Trains are available. A 180 km road ride to Raithal Village from Dehradun Via Chinyalisaur and Uttarkashi travelling across the river Bhagirathi, the main source of River Ganga. Breakfast and lunch during the travel will be provided in the road side inns. The cost of the meals during the travel will be paid by the individual. Arrival at Raithal village, a small village located 40 km from the city of Uttarkashi which serves as the starting point of the trek. Stay at the homestay in Raithal village. A quick introduction & briefing session with the trek leader and fellow trekkers. Dinner and rest at the homestay.

Post a filling breakfast, we begin our trek from Raithal village towards our camp in the vicinity of Gui Lake. The trail initially runs through an alley bordered by terraced farms and golden paddy fields with a local stream accompanying them. An hour in, we deep dive into a thick forest stretch lined up with pinewood and oaks. The trees form a dense cover over us, leaving us with a sense of being in the wilderness, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. A mesmerizing view of Mt. Srikanth, Mt. Bandarpoonch and DraupadikaDaanda peaks are visible through this scenic spot. On a good sunny day, one can see the whole panorama of Garhwal Himalayas right from Gangotri to Mt. Jaonli from these vast grounds. The elevation we gain today is about 848M. Once the campsite is ready, we have our lunch and then get ready to visit the jade coloured Gui Lake. The winter temperatures near the lake make the water body completely frozen, even during daytimes. After spending some time around the lake and surrounding clearings, we make our way back to the campsite. The sunset views from this campsite are a highlight not to be missed! We spend the rest of the evening enjoying hot snacks followed by an early dinner.

On this day of the trek, you continue along the trail from Gui towards Dayara. As you ascend from Gui, you begin to see mountains on the other side that were previously hidden from view.

Today's trek is short, covering a distance of only 4 kilometers, with gradual ascents and flat sections in between.

Starting from Gui, join the main trail and climb up to Gui Thatch, a small meadow located in the forest. On one side, you will find 5-6 Chania huts and a compact pond in front of them. There is also a mound beside the pond. You will also notice igloo-shaped structures of the Forest Department near the Chania huts.

Gui Thatch offers stunning views of the entire Gangotri range, including Shrikanth, Gangotri I, II, and III. You can also spot the Jaonli peak on the right and the top of Bandarpoonch on the left.

The next half-kilometer from Gui Thatch is an easy walk through the beautiful rhododendron. Take your time to soak in the setting of the Himalayan forest.

Here, you may have the opportunity to participate in a hug-a-tree experience facilitated by your Trek Leader, which helps you connect more deeply with the forest.

As you continue, you gradually start ascending again and cross a couple of streams that may be flowing, dried, or frozen depending on the season. Just five minutes after crossing these streams, you will see an umbrella-shaped rain shelter, which serves as a rest point. Chilapada is not far from here. Take a break, catch your breath, stretch your legs, and pause for 10-15 minutes before proceeding further.

Chilapada is only 20 minutes away from the rain shelter. After five minutes of trekking from the rain shelter, you will notice a broken trail on your left. Leave the main trail and follow this broken trail, which leads to Chilapada, a small opening between the meadows.

The route from Chilapada Camp to the peak of Dayara Bugyal, which rises to around 3864 m (12645 ft), provides magnificent views of the Himalayan landscape and alpine meadows. A beautiful wide area draped in silver-white snow will present itself in front of us. Walking across the meadows this time, Nei Tahl, Bakariya Top in Garhwal Himalayas, Black Peak and Bandarpoonch, Srikanth, Draupadi Ka Danda, Jaunli Mountain becomes still enormous but even more beautiful as each step is taken. At the peak, we will stay for the right amount of time and gaze at the eternal view for some time more. After some time spent at the peak and taking in delightful views, it’s time to head back to Gui Camp using the same route that you came on. The view on the way down is a good way to view the scenery from a different angle and brings in a safe time to relax the muscles after the long and difficult climb. Upon arrival at the camp, you can sit back, stretch, and enjoy memories of climbing to the top of Dayara Bugyal and then coming back to the camp.

Options to reach Dehradun

1. Take an overnight train/bus to Dehradun, and then take a cab to the pickup point.

We always recommend to go for the govt buses over the private ones outside the bus station as based on the experience we have found that there are very high chances of delay involved with private buses. Also, govt. buses are always more reliable. Whichever bus you choose, just make sure to reach Dehradun at least by 06:30 am positively.

2. Take flight to Dehradun airport (Jolly Grant Airport) (25 km, 50 min), if coming by flight then come one day early.

If you prefer to travel independently, you can either take a government bus or book a private cab.
