Overview

The Gaumukh and Tapovan Trek is another iconic trek in Uttarakhand, India, renowned for its stunning beauty, spiritual significance, and challenging terrain. The trek starts from Gangotri, the source of the Ganges River, and leads to Gaumukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier, and further ascends to Tapovan, a high-altitude meadow surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks.

Day :1 Reach Gangotri from Dehradun
    Drive distance: 242 km | Drive Duration: 8 hours Transport will be arranged from Dehradun at 6.00 am. Cab cost per vehicle will be Rs 9,500(5-6 trekkers) and Rs 14,000 (10-12 trekkers). This is to be shared among trekkers and paid directly to the driver.

Day :2 Gangotri (3,048 m) to Chirbasa (3,600 m) - 6 h trek - 9km
    On this day, we start our tapovan trekking from Gangotri to Chirbasa (3,650 m). From Gangotri we move along the beaten trail towards Chirbasa, which is on a tree line. The entire Gaumukh Tapovan trek today is along the roaring Bhagirathi River.

Day :3 Chirbasa (11,630 ft) to Bhojbasa (12,415 ft) Trek Distance: 5 km | Trek Duration: 3 hours
    Moderate. Initial 100 m ascent to get back on the trail. Very gradual ascent all the way to Bhojbasa. In Bhojbasa there is a small temple and a potential campsite near the river. In the afternoon we are free to explore the area and to enjoy excellent sunset on Bhagirathi's group of peaks.

Day :4 Bhojbasa (12,415 ft) to Tapovan (14,203 ft) Trek Distance: 6 km | Trek Duration: 9 hours
    Early in the morning enjoy the panoramic view of the Bhagirathi group of peaks. After breakfast, we trek to Gaumukh (3,890 m), the source of the Ganges. We explore the area and trek to Tapovan, one of the finest high altitude alpine meadows in the area. Gradual ascent for 2.5 hours. 2 hours glacier walk followed by 1 hour of moderate ascent. Final 1.5 hours is a steep ascent.

Day :5 Tapovan (14,203 ft) to Bhojbasa (12,415 ft) Trek Distance: 6 km | Trek Duration: 5 hours
    Early in the morning, we enjoy the sunrise on high peaks. After breakfast, we trek down to Bhojbasa.

Day :6 Bhojbasa (12,415 ft) to Gangotri (10,050 ft) Trek Distance: 14 km | Trek Duration: 8 hours
    We trek to Gangotri in the morning. Dinner and overnight stay at a guesthouse.

Day :7 Gangotri to Dehradun drive, 9 h drive 245 km
    Gangotri to Dehradun drive, 9 h drive 245 km

How to reach

By Air:
Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport to Dehradun by flight, almost 25km from the city. You can find regular flights from Delhi to Dehradun.
However, if you plan to reach Dehradun by flight, it is better to come one day in advance.

By Train:
Two express trains are convenient if you want to reach Dehradun from Delhi by train. With the train, it is an overnight journey. The two trains are mentioned below:

Nandadevi Express – Train no: 12205 (Departure 11:50pm; Arrival – 5:40am)
Dehradun Express – Train no: 12687 (Departure – 9:10pm; Arrival – 5:00am)

By Bus:
From Delhi, you can find a regular bus service to Dehradun. ISBT Kashmere Gate is the central bus station in Delhi, from where you will find both AC and non-AC buses for Dehradun.

Drive from Dehradun to Gangotri. It is a 10-12 hour drive from Dehradun. Gangotri is the base camp for your trek.

We organise transport to Gangotri from Dehradun. Our vehicles leave at 6:30 am sharp. The cab fare is Rs 9,500 and Tempo Traveller Rs 14,000 ).- This is to be shared among trekkers

Ques: 1 What will be the average temperature at Gomukh Trek?

Ans: 1 The average temperature on Gomukh Gangotri trek in the day time will be about 12°C-17°C and in the night time, it can be as low as 2°C-7°C and can drop to -2°C - 3°C at Tapovan

Ques: 2 What is the difficulty level of Gomukh Tapovan Trek?

Ans: 2 The difficulty level of Gaumukh Trek ranges from moderate to difficult and therefore is not recommended for first timers. There are tricky glacier sections to be crossed in addition to steep climbs. Irrespective of your prior experience, it is essential that you be very fit and well prepared for the trek.

Ques: 3 Is Gaumukh Trek Safe?

Ans: 3 Yes the trek is safe but needs guidance and assistance from an experienced team. There are certain sections which are risky. You may witness certain rockfall zones on the way. The best way to minimise these risks is taking assistance from an experienced team.

Ques: 4 How do I prepare for the Gaumukh trek?

Ans: 4 Start running/walking at least 3-4 Kms everyday.

Ques: 5 How do you manage toilets?

Ans: 5 As there are no permanent toilets on the trek, we carry toilet tents which are dry toilets so you need to carry toilet tissue paper with you.

Ques: 6 How long is the Gaumukh Trek?

Ans: 6 The snout of the Gangotri Glacier is around 18 kms from the Gangotri Temple. Tapovan is further 3 kms from the Glacier

Cancellation policy

Life is unpredictable and we understand sometimes you have to cancel or change your trip dates and it is our endeavour to make it as easy possible for you. However, please understand we plan everything including guide fees, permits, accommodation and ration in advance. Therefore any cancellation means inconvenience and certain losses to the people involved in various stages of programme. Keeping that in mind, our cancellation charges are as below-

Cancellation prior to 30 days from start of the event: Get monetary refund with 15% of cancellation charges on trek fee.

Cancellation between 30 days and 15 days to the start of event: 50% on trek fee is non refundable and the remaining 50 % will be given as cash voucher which is valid for 1 year.

Cancellation less than 15 days to the start of event: No refund.

Please note cancellation will be only accepted by email.

Note: The Himalayan Daredevils reserves the right to cancel a programme before departure in the event of logistical problems arriving due to natural calamities, strikes, wars on any other circumstances that makes the event inadvisable. In this case, we will refund 50% of the event fees.

We plan itineraries based on the information at the time of planning and in rare circumstances, there are subject to change. In the event that the itinerary is changes or delayed due to unforeseen circumstances such as bad weather conditions, transportation delays, government intervention, landslides etc. We will always aim to give you the best experience possible.
