Overview

It’s thrilling! It’s intriguing! It’s challenging! It’s unpredictable! And what’s better is it packs a whole lot of surprises for you to uncover each day. If you are someone who likes the sound of ‘extreme’, ‘harsh’, ‘ice, ‘cold’, ‘unpredictable’ in front of the word ‘adventure’, Chadar Trek in Ladakh is probably your soul trek because these are the very elements that make this wonder of a trek an experience unparalleled in the vast landscape of the Himalayas. Chadar which literally means ‘a blanket’ very accurately describes this trek which is literally a walk on a thick sheet of ice formed over the tantalizing blue of Zanskar River – white as milk in some places and in some translucent so you feel literally like you are walking on the water. It is as magical as it sounds, and no, it is not easy! Although it does not involve too much of a gain in altitude, 9 days will seem 9 too few to learn how to walk on ice, to adapt to the extreme temperature which drops to as low as -30 degrees and is likely to make you feel like your fingers might fall off. But for these very reasons, it is a trek worth doing! With sledges as a means of transporting ration, and caves as the only refuge from the changing weather, being on Chadar is like being teleported to a strange land experienced only by a few - it is a geographic marvel through and through.

With no sense of constancy, the landscape changes with a blink of an eye, with the ice and snow constantly changing shape and form, one more unstable than the other. And to think that the biggest adventure of your life is just a daily life routine for a few – communities living in the region do this every single day to go about their daily living – is quite a humbling realization. You get to see the land through the eyes of its people as you meet the locals on your trail. The trek is not only about the beauty of the landscape but a lesson and insight into a whole different way of living. It gives you a window into the colourful yet harsh life in the Zanskar Valley.

If you are ready to explore a Himalayan culture, to soak in the colours of the city, to be engulfed by the cold winds and are ready for any challenge that might come your way, we suggest you bring yourself to this cold haven with a frozen river underneath and dramatic landscapes all around. If each day on this trek didn’t bring something new, the highlight of the trek could very easily be Nerak waterfall which is a massive waterfall frozen in time. What’s amazing about this trek is that every person who lives through the experience has a different story to tell because that’s how quickly things take a turn here in this part of Ladakh!

Today is a rest day, giving you the opportunity to acclimatize to the high altitude while exploring some of Leh’s cultural landmarks. After a relaxed morning, you can head out to visit the following places:

    • Shey Monastery: Once the summer capital of Ladakh, Shey Monastery houses a magnificent 12-meter-high statue of Buddha and offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes.

Night Stay – our Camp – on twin/three share basis

Today is your first full day of trekking as you journey from Tsomo Paldar Camp to Tibb Cave Camp along the famous Chadar Trek route, a frozen river trek on the Zanskar River. This trek will offer incredible views of frozen waterfalls, towering cliffs, and the stark beauty of the Ladakhi winter landscape.

    Trek Details:

    • Starting Point: Tsomo Paldar Camp (Altitude: ~3,390 meters / 11,120 feet)
    • Ending Point: Tibb Cave Camp (Altitude: ~3,300 meters / 10,826 feet)
    • Trek Distance: Approx. 14 km
    • Trek Duration: 6-7 hours
    • Trek Difficulty: Moderate

    Route Highlights:

    1. Frozen Zanskar River:
      • As you leave Tsomo Paldar, you’ll continue trekking on the frozen Zanskar River, known as the Chadar, meaning “sheet of ice.” The entire path is essentially a natural ice highway.
      • You’ll witness varying textures of ice, from smooth, glass-like surfaces to rougher patches. Walking on the ice can be tricky at times, requiring slow and steady steps.
    2. Surrounding Cliffs and Canyons:
      • The trek takes you through steep gorges, with towering cliffs rising on both sides of the river. The walls can reach as high as 600 meters, making for awe-inspiring views. The dramatic rock formations and icy surroundings create an otherworldly atmosphere.
      • As you pass through narrow canyons, you’ll notice the cold air trapped within, keeping the Chadar frozen even when other areas warm up during the day.
    3. Frozen Waterfalls:
      • Along the way, you’ll encounter spectacular frozen waterfalls cascading down from the cliffs above. These natural ice formations are a highlight of the trek, offering a rare glimpse into the winter beauty of the region.
      • Take a moment to pause and capture photographs of these surreal icefalls.
    4. Wildlife Sightings:
      • The region is home to wildlife like snow leopards (though rare to spot), blue sheep, and ibex. Keep an eye out for wildlife tracks in the snow along the trail.
    5. Arrival at Tibb Cave:
      • After several hours of trekking on the ice, you’ll reach Tibb Cave, a natural shelter that has been used by trekkers and locals for years.
      • Tibb Cave sits in a wide valley, offering open views of the frozen river and the surrounding cliffs. Nearby, you’ll find prayer flags fluttering in the wind, adding a touch of color to the otherwise stark landscape.
      • There is also a small stream flowing nearby, often used for fresh drinking water during winter.

    Altitude and Acclimatization:

    • The altitude remains relatively stable between Tsomo Paldar and Tibb Cave, with only slight changes in elevation.
    • Since you’ve already been acclimatizing in Leh, this section of the trek should not present any major altitude issues, but continue to stay hydrated and avoid over-exertion.

    Overnight stay: Tibb Cave Camp

At the camp, you’ll enjoy a warm meal and spend the night in tents. The starlit sky over the frozen river is a sight to behold, offering a magical end to a day filled with adventure.

Fitness Required & Preparation Guide

We recommend jogging as the best routine to get fit for a trek. It works on the same muscles that you use while trekking — your calves, glutes and hamstrings. It helps increase your stamina day by day. It is also an easy routine that does not require any equipment or tools.

Fitness target:

To do this trek comfortably, you must be able to cover 5 km in under 35 minutes. This is the minimum fitness required for this trek.

How to achieve this fitness?

  • Start jogging at least 4 days a week
  • If you cannot run 5 km immediately, start with 2 km and increase to 5 km over 2-3 weeks.
  • Once you’re able to run 5 km, increase your pace day by day.
  • Gradually increase your pace and bring it down to 5 km in less than 35 mins.
  • You must be able to run 5 km in 35 mins consistently for at least 2 weeks before the trek.

This trek requires at least 6-8 weeks of preparation. The longer, the better. So plan your trek soon and start preparing.
